LaserFocus Privacy Policy

LaserFocus helps you stay engaged with online videos by periodically generating multiple-choice questions. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

What we collect

• Tab audio (active tab only, after you click Start). We capture sound from the current browser tab to create short questions. We do not access your microphone.
• Usage counters. Counts such as minutes processed and questions asked to enforce free-tier limits.
• Local settings. Your chosen interval and number of questions are stored locally in your browser.

We do not collect your name, email, passwords, browsing history, keystrokes, or page text/images.

How we use data

• Core functionality. We send tab audio to our backend, which forwards it to a transcriber for transcription. We then send transcript text to one llm to generate MCQs and display them in the page.
• Quota enforcement. Usage counters (e.g., minutes/questions used) are stored to apply monthly limits.

Data sharing

We share data only with processors necessary to provide the service:

• Transcriber API – automatic speech recognition (transcription of tab audio)
• LLM API – question generation from transcript text

We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers.

Storage & retention

• Audio/transcripts. Not stored by LaserFocus after processing. Audio is transmitted for transcription and discarded. Transcripts used for question generation are processed in-memory and not retained by LaserFocus.
• Usage counters. Stored minimally to enforce daily limits and reset on a rolling basis (typically daily).
• Local settings. Saved on your device until you change or remove the Extension.

Security

• All network traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
• We use the minimum data needed to provide the feature set and restrict access by design (least privilege).

Permissions (why we need them)

• tabCapture – capture tab audio only after you click Start.
• activeTab & scripting – inject the MCQ overlay and control video playback (pause/resume/seek) on the current page.
• offscreen – keep transcription running if the popup is closed.
• storage – remember your settings and usage counters.
• tabs / notifications – manage active tab video and timing (if enabled).

Your choices

• Click Stop at any time to end capture and question generation.
• Uninstalling the Extension removes local settings stored by the Extension.

International users & legal bases

For users in the EEA/UK, processing is based on performance of a contract (providing the features you request) and our legitimate interests (security, quota enforcement). You may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data where applicable.

Changes

We may update this policy as our product evolves. We will update the “Effective date” above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.
